About Jonnie

Jonnie Penn is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, a sought-after keynote speaker, a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and a Rausing, Williamson and Lipton Trust doctoral scholar researching artificial intelligence at the University of Cambridge. He is currently an Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University. Formerly, he was a MIT Media Lab Assembly Fellow, Google Technology Policy Fellow, Fellow of the British National Academy of Writing (Pembroke College, Cambridge), and television personality.

Jonnie is passionate about helping others discover purpose in their work by (re)contextualizing seemingly rapid civic, technological, and economic trends. His latest research applies to the Future of Work for Millenials and Post-Millenials in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He has served as an expert speaker at the United Nations, European Parliament, and UK House of Lords, as well as for global corporations. He serves on the IEEE’s Working Group on a Standard for Child and Student Data Governance (IEEE P7004). His thoughts on the direction of AI research have recently been featured in IBM Think Leaders, PwC, and elsewhere.  (Please note, invitations to all male panels will be declined.)
In 2018, Jonnie  served a researcher at the MIT Media Lab and Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society on their AI & Governance initative. Jonnie holds a first-class degree from the University of Cambridge and McGill University. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He enjoys travel, 8mm filmmaking, historical non-fiction, and  experimental jazz.

As a teenager, Jonnie founded The Buried Life, a +1M member online community that asks, “What do you want to do before you die?” As part of this project, which became a cult-hit television series aired in seventy countries and six languages, Jonnie helped others from various walks of life accomplish meaningful dreams, such as reuniting a street-artist with his son after walking out on him seventeen years earlier. Jonnie played basketball with President Obama, had a beer with Prince Harry, guested on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and toured North America with Chance the Rapper, among other novel life experiences.
